Wearing a helmet is an extremely important part of being a responsible driver. Read all about why it is necessary and the different factors to keep in mind when selecting one that is best for you.

A helmet is perhaps the most important thing you need to have with you and be wearing while driving your bike or two wheeler. Let’s read all about why it is necessary and what are the things to keep in mind when selecting one that works best for you.

Why is a Bike Helmet or Protective Cap Necessary?

Driving a bike can be an exhilarating activity but it can also be precarious at the best of times. It can become difficult to balance and thus the person riding it can be prone to accidents. A helmet is important and absolutely crucial for this reason, as it protects you from head injuries and helps you avert their often life changing consequences. It can help you avoid injuries that could otherwise be fatal.

Not only is it important for your health and safety, you must also wear a helmet in accordance with the law. It is mandatory for bike riders in India to be wearing a helmet. The penalty for not doing so can be a fine of up to Rs. 1000 or the suspension of your license for up to three months.

How Should You Choose Your Bike Helmet?

Keep the following things in mind when selecting which bike helmet is best for you.

1. Shape and Size: Make sure you select the helmet that is right for the shape and size of your head, as this is different for everyone.

2. Weight: The weight of the helmet should be distributed evenly across the helmet. This is so that there is no unnecessary strain upon your head and especially your shoulders.

3. Correct Fit: The correct fit is of utmost importance. The helmet should feel slightly tight on your head and cover the maximum surface area of your head.

4. Material: The best material for your helmet is fibre-glass composites, or carbon composites and Kevlar. The interior of the helmet should be cushioned or padded. The air mesh should keep the inside clean.

5. Buckle and Strap Type: You should ensure that the strap on your helmet is sturdy and strong and that the buckle is easy to operate. A commonly preferred type is the “Double D” ring system buckle type.

6. Ventilation: Especially on warmer days, ventilation is extremely important. Your helmet should have holes for ventilation and some premium helmets even have exhaust systems.

7. Visibility: Your helmet should sit just above your eyebrow to ensure clear vision. It should also not block either side so your peripheral vision remains clear.

Takeaway

Wearing a helmet is of utmost importance. Not only is it necessary to be able to keep yourself physically safe in case of an accident, it is also required by law. There are many factors to keep in mind when selecting a helmet and you should make sure that the one you select is right for you.
