Our responsibility as a bike owner does not end with purchasing a two-wheeler of our choice and insuring it. Many people stop maintaining their bikes after a few years of purchasing it and are not aware that they can do it at home without any extra cost. Moreover, they are also not aware that maintaining their bikes in good condition can actually help them to retain the maximum benefits of their bike insurance. In this article, we are going to give you tips on how you can maintain your bike in good condition.

Tips To Maintain Bike In Good Condition

Easy Tips To Maintain Your Bike In Good Condition

The following is a list of basic bike servicing jobs that you follow at home to keep your bike in a good condition. Here’s what you can do -

  • Clean Your Oil Filter

Your bike’s engine is its lifeline and you should take good care of it. Make sure to regularly remove the plug to drain the pump and check the washer of the drain plug. Clean the plug if necessary and refit it into your engine. If your oil filter has become old, take it out and put a new filter in its place.

  • Clean Your Air Filter

Bikes and two wheelers usually have a foam or paper air filter. If the air filter of your bike is made out of paper, you should tap it to remove the accumulated dust particles. If it is made out of foam, you should wash it in an appropriate solvent, dry it and recoil it. You should always get a new air filter if the old one is worn out.

  • Measure Spark Plug Gaps

The spark plugs of your bike tend to wear and tear with use and the gap between its electrodes need to be maintained as per their alignment. You should take care to check the gaps between the spark plugs with the help of a feeler gauge and try to re-align the electrodes on each. While doing this, you should take care to clean up any dirt deposits on the firing ends as it will ease in combustion. If your electrodes or spark plugs are corroded, you must replace them.

  • Adjust Your Clutch

Ensuring that your bike performs with smooth gear comes with an assessment of its clutch. Shifting gears can have frictions if your clutch drags or slips. Most bike models have a cable operated clutch and come with a thread adjuster and locknut at every end. You should take time out to check if these are set in the right position to maintain a smooth functioning of your bike.

  • Check Brake Pads

A bike’s brake pad wears down with time and sometimes it becomes necessary to replace them. To check the condition of your bike's brake pads, you can use a caliper’s mouth. Generally, brake pads indicate their groove and tear by a groove that has a line for indicating the wear’s limit. You should check whether this line is visible or not, if it is not, it means that your pads need to be changed.

Take Away

The above tips are something that you can follow to maintain your bike in a good condition. However, despite taking these measures, your bike may be prone to wear and tear. This is why you should remember to invest in a bike insurance policy so that you can get a reimbursement for some of the parts that need to be changed. Hopefully, these steps will allow you to keep your bike rolling with adequate attention.
