COVID-19: Sputnik V Shot 83% Effective Against Delta Variant, Says Russia’s Health Minister
COVID-19 Third Wave: As predicted by experts, the Delta variant can soon bring the third wave to India. In this scenario, the Sputnik V vaccine, which is one of the effective vaccines given to the people in the country, can help to curb the spread of the COVID-19 third wave. But as per the recent findings shared by Russia’s Health Minister Mikhail Murashko on Wednesday, Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine is around 83% effective against the Delta variant of COVID-19, which is lesser than previously thought. In June, the developers said that Sputnik was around 90% effective against the Delta variant.

As per the authorities, the rise in COVID-19 cases in June and July was to be blamed which caused the more contagious Delta variant. Also, they blame the population's reluctance to get vaccinated even after shots are made available.
The Director of the Gamaleya Institute which developed the vaccine said in an interview on Wednesday that Sputnik V is safe and effective against all strains of the coronavirus.
In India, the Sputnik V vaccine has been made available along with the other two vaccines namely Covaxin and Covishield. Since the Sputnik V vaccine’s soft pilot in Hyderabad in May, it has spread to around 80 cities. As per Dr. Reddy, locally manufactured Sputnik V vaccines are expected to be made available in September or October.
As of now, in India, 51.9 crore vaccine doses have been given to the population, of which 11.5 crore people are fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
