Omicron Variant: Why Are the Scientists Worried?

The coronavirus has been causing the pandemic for almost two years now and it seems like its reign of terror is far from over. This is evident from the new coronavirus variant that has emerged, the omicron. With rising concerns over a new wave of infection and the exact nature of this variant, scientists across the world have taken note of the spread of this variant.

Omicron Variant: Why Are the Scientists Worried?

What is the Status of the Omicron Variant?

The Omicron variant is the newest variant of the coronavirus that has been detected. It was first detected in South Africa but has since then spread to over 50 countries across the globe. Currently, the count stands at almost 57 countries. If one is wondering why there are these new variants emerging, UNICEF has answers. They have stated that the chances of a virus mutating are increased when there is a widespread circulation of the virus as has been seen during this pandemic. Perhaps, the first step then becomes to control this spread through preventative measures, as it is such mutating that has caused the development of the omicron variant currently and might bring more in the future. Studies are still being conducted on the new variant and there are largely no conclusive results as the variant has not been discovered for long. As part of the measures that have been undertaken to protect citizens from the omicron variant, traveling restrictions have been undertaken. However, it is advisable to not rely on them simply. COVID regulations, especially the wearing of masks and getting vaccinated is crucial right now for the welfare of everyone.

Why are Scientists Worried?

The main cause of worry with the omicron variant is its rapid transmission rate. For now, it has been found that the omicron variant can be up to 4.2 times more infectious than the Delta variant. In South Africa, the omicron variant has led to a surge in cases, especially among young people. In other nations too, the spread of the omicron variant has been primarily among people who had recently travelled abroad, especially to South Africa and people who have had contact with them. The Delta variant is the other dominant variant right now and has been leading to a surge of cases lately, especially in Europe. What is hopeful right now is that the symptoms from the omicron variant are mild. There have also been no reports of death for now, that has been exclusively attributed to the omicron variant. Compared to the Delta variant, this new variant might be less severe in causing COVID-19. However, it is still important to stay alert in case there are any new developments that indicate things taking a turn for the worse.

Endnotes

Tracking and tracing of COVID-19 patients and especially those who have returned from countries abroad has taken precedence and has become increasingly important. Government officials have also placed importance on the following of regular COVID-19 regulations that have been seen to be effective till now. Since vaccination is one of the only available preventative measures right now, it is crucial that everyone gets vaccinated as soon as possible. In India too, vaccines are available to all citizens who are above the age of eighteen both for free as well as for a fee. Therefore, it is important that all eligible people get vaccinated as soon as possible.
