The Rise and Impact Of COVID-19 In India

The world has been grappling with the global pandemic for almost two years now, and India is no different. There have been devastating waves of infections that have left a lasting impact on India. Although the country is slowly going back to its normal operations, there is much to take note of, when it comes to the rise and impact of COVID-19 in India.

Current COVID-19 Situation in India

After the devastating second wave that was seen in the early half of 2021, India has had a relatively low number of infections for the past few months. However, with the omicron variant, there has been rising concerns once again. The omicron variant, the latest variant of the coronavirus, was detected only a few weeks ago. Since then, it has rapidly spread to other countries and has been seen to have an extremely high transmissibility rate. It has spread to India as well, with over 40 cases being detected already. With the recent death of a patient from the Omicron variant in the UK, it has been found that the omicron variant is indeed deadly, even though it is seen to produce milder symptoms than other variants. 

Current Precautions Being Undertaken

Since most of the infections due to the omicron have been seen in travelers, there have been travel restrictions imposed on international flights in India. Tracking and tracing of returnees and those in contact is also being undertaken to control the spread of the new variant. Currently, over 40 patients have been detected with the omicron variant in India. Since the symptoms from it are mild, there are probably no possibilities of a lockdown currently. However, studies are still ongoing on the variant and there is limited data, which is why it is difficult to gauge the possibilities. Moreover, WHO has also stated that simply relying on travel restrictions is not enough. Everyone must continue to follow the COVID-19 regulations that have been made standard since the beginning of the pandemic. This includes wearing proper masks, which is one of the most important precautions. A mask not only protects the wearer to stay away from infection, but also stops them from spreading the virus to others. 

Vaccination in India

Vaccines remain one of the most important steps that will protect people against the virus and its variants. It has been seen to reduce chances of death from COVID-19 and reduce the severity of the infection. Although the omicron has recently been seen to reduce the efficacy of the vaccine, it is definitely not to be dismissed completely as data on all fronts is still limited. In India, there are currently three vaccines that are being given out, the Covaxin, the Covishield and the Sputnik V. While the Covaxin and the Covishield are both being administered via two doses, the Sputnik V simply requires one dose per individual. Vaccines are available at both government facilities, where they are given out for free and at private facilities where there are standard charges. Indians must register at the COWIN website, a government portal to get their vaccination certificate. It also contains information on the availability of vaccines near you as well as provides the downloadable vaccination certificate.
