Who Should Or Should Not Take The COVID-19 Vaccine?

The only way out of the COVID-19 crisis is to stop the spread of this contagious disease. After months of research and study, 13 different types of vaccines have been administered worldwide, out of which around three are in use in India.

Crores of people registered for the jabs and have been vaccinated in this drive.

Around 3.1% of the total population of India has been given doses.

However, there are certain limitations to this vaccine drive. Not everyone is eligible for the dose, as it may turn out to be extensively harmful to them.

Who Should Take the COVID-19 Vaccine?

Any individual who is 18 or above is eligible to take the vaccine, including the ones who have pre-existing ailments like auto-immune disorders. The pre-existing conditions that are not in the restricted list include:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Pulmonary
  • Liver and Kidney diseases; provided that these are in a stable condition.

Who Should Not Take The Vaccine?

Though the vaccine is essential for the prevention of coronavirus disease, there are certain cases where consideration has to be provided, these include:

1. People with allergies

People who have severe allergies from any component present in the vaccine, must not get vaccinated or people who have allergies from any type of vaccines or injections should also avoid taking the jab.

Also, if some people have experienced allergic reactions to the first dose of the vaccine, then they must refrain from taking the second one. People with allergic conditions are observed for 15 mins post-vaccination by the healthcare workers.

 2. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding

There are no arguments on the vaccination of pregnant or breastfeeding women, due to a lack of data on the same. However, they have been excluded as a precautionary, to avoid any mishap.

If a pregnant or breastfeeding woman is prone to COVID-19 disease, she is advised to consult a medical expert and discuss the risks, if involved.

3. People with underlying and chronic health diseases

People with any pre-existing ailments can take the vaccine, but the ones with chronic diseases like HIV, must not take the dose, as there is no data present regarding their condition.

Also, patients who have diseases that respond chronically to injections or vaccines are advised not to go for the vaccination.

 4. Children and adolescents below the age of 18

The government has refrained children and adolescents from the vaccination drive. In the future, if any new variant of coronavirus targets the children then an updated version of the vaccine will possibly be made available. As of now, children have not been included due to not being at a larger risk.

 5. People who have been tested COVID-19 positive

For people who have been tested positive for COVID-19, medical advice has to be taken before the dosage is given.

Preventive Measures To Be Taken After COVID-19 Vaccination

After the vaccination, people have been advised to adhere to the COVID-19 precautionary guidelines. In the initial phase after the jab has been taken, the body prepares itself for fighting against the coronavirus. Therefore, people are more prone to the spread, and hence, are supposed to stay at home and follow the protocols.

Some symptoms might persist for a few days post-vaccination, which is normal. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), the COVID-19 vaccine can be taken along with other recommended vaccines.

Conclusion

During the registration for the vaccination drive, you must read the instructions carefully, to understand the eligibility criteria. In this vaccination process, the frontline workers have been given priority over others as they have worked during the pandemic and are the most vulnerable to the disease spread.

Everyone in the eligible section, must get vaccinated as soon as possible and cooperate with the healthcare workers and the government for the smooth functioning of the process.
