Guinea Health Chief Calls Ebola an Epidemic After 7 Confirmed Cases

The Health Chief of Guinea's National Agency for Health Security, Sakoba Keïta, has declared Ebola an ‘epidemic’ in the country. He confirmed the same after the emergence of 7 Ebola cases that resulted in 3 deaths. 

Since the 2013 Ebola outbreak, this is the first possible resurgence of the virus. Recently, some people contracted the disease after attending a burial in the southeastern region of Nzerekore. After a few days of the burial, some of the attendees suffered from the illness and witnessed symptoms like bleeding, vomiting, diarrhea. 

In total, the Ebola virus has claimed more than 13,000 lives in West Africa’s Guinea since its initial occurrence in 2013 till 2016. 

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Africa Director Matshidiso Moeti also tweeted her concern and shared that she is ramping up readiness and response efforts for Guinea.
