How to Apply for Driving Licence in India?

As per the Government of India, it is mandatory for individuals to get a driving licence before they start driving a motorcycle legally on the Indian roads. Also, motor training is very important if you have never driven a motorcycle before. Therefore, enrol yourself in a driving school.

What Are the Driving Licence Categories in India?

Given below are the driving licence categories in India:

1. Personal Use Licence Classes

On the basis of whether you want a driving licence of commercial or personal use, you can get it from different classes. Given below are details of personal use licence class:

2. Commercial Use Licence Classes

In the commercial use category, you can get a licence for heavy or light motor vehicles such as delivery vans, taxis, etc. as per your requirement. Heavy trailers need a commercial licence within the trailer category. In all, there are around 11 different categories of licences available in India to choose from.

Eligibility to Get a Motorcycle Licence

Given below is the eligibility criteria to get a motorcycle licence in India:

1. Motorcycles with Gear

To be able to ride a motorcycle with gear, you should be at least 18 years old and be aware of traffic rules and regulations. You will also need a valid age proof and address proof.

2. Motorcycles Without Gear

To be able to ride motorcycles without gear on the Indian roads, you should be aged at least 16 years and have the consent of your guardian or parents. You should also be informed of traffic rules and regulations.

3. Heavy Commercial Vehicles

To be able to ride heavy commercial vehicles on the Indian roads, you must be aged more than 18 years and should have cleared the 8th standard. Also, you should be trained from any government training school or a school that is affiliated with the state government.

Documents Required to Get a Motorcycle Licence

Given below are the documents that you should have in order to get a motorcycle licence:

  1. Address Proof: LIC policy bond, aadhar card, voter’s ID card, permanent address proof, ration card, electricity bill, passport, house agreement, and temporary address proof.
  2. Age Proof: SSC certificate, birth certificate, PAN card, passport, and school transfer certificate.
  3. Other Documents: 3 passport size photographs in case of learner’s licence, 3 passport size photographs duly filled application form in case of a permanent licence, a medical certificate for applicants aged more than 40 years, and application fees.

How to Apply for a Motorcycle Licence?

To apply for a driving licence in India, you can opt for online mode or offline mode. In the offline mode, you need to visit the RTO office and get the application form. If you are a new learner, then you must get Form 1 for learner licence and Form 4 for permanent licence. You can download the forms from the state transport office’s official website.

You need to fill and submit the form along with required documents. You will be allotted a time slot for a driving test, which you need to clear to get the driving licence. If you pass the test, you will get the licence on your registered address. You can also take help from driving schools to procure a licence.
