The modern bike helmet can withstand tremendous forces, but it is also more delicate than it looks and it must be lightweight to be functional. Now that the riding period has finally arrived, here are some helmet care tips to keep your helmet in top shape and to help you decide when it's time to replace it.

All spring ride plans may have come to a halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has confined most of us to home base for the time being. Staying indoors is the call of the hour, as frustrating as it is, and we must accept it. Riding is one of our passion for bikes, but even if you're stuck inside, there's a lot you can do to get ready for that first ride once this is all over. Now, helmets vary, but mostly, this guide will assist you in getting that helmet cleaned and stored to prepare for your next ride.

What You Should Know About Maintaining Your Bike Helmet?

What You Should Know About Maintaining Your Bike Helmet?

Here are a few ways in which you can maintain your bike helmet:

  • Dis-Assembly

Spread a sheet of paper on a table or the floor and place your helmet in the centre for all the pieces you'll remove. We'll start with the visor. Most helmets have a visor release lock located under the sliding mechanism; you'll need to pull up on it to release the visor. Then there are the cushions, which vary depending on the manufacturer but should comprise two interchangeable cheek pads and a central liner cushion that runs along the top. Most helmets I've seen have simple mechanisms with button clips, so they shouldn't be too difficult to remove. The air vent in the nose is then removed.

  • Shell and Visor Maintenance

There are now over 1000 items on the market that claim to be the best online helmet cleaners. However, you might not have them on hand, or order is not a good idea given the current circumstances. As a result, it's best to keep things straightforward and keep unneeded contaminants out of our helmets. Wrap the shell in tissue paper (kitchen roll is typically the most cost-effective option), then spray the whole thing with water. The visor follows the same procedure. Allow them to rest for a while.

  • Liner And Padding Maintenance

Since it absorbs all the moisture from your skin and simply soaks it up, padding can be a breeding ground for bacteria. While I will be guilty of not following what I preach, it is recommended to wash the liner at least once a month. Most problems are normally solved by soaking them in a mild soap and water mixture for around 30 minutes. Rinse with fresh water, repeating if necessary, until the water is clear. Using a light wringing motion, wring out the water and hang to dry.

  • Storage and Re-Assembly

Simply reassemble it and store it in the helmet bag until it's completely dry. If humidity or moisture is a problem, consider putting a few silica gel packs in it to keep it dry while you store it. Don’t forget the nose deflector.

Conclusion

Bike helmets are designed to withstand a single impact. If you experience an accident, you can not wear the helmet again because it will not adequately shield your head in the event of another crash. To absorb the impact, the material inside the helmet cracks and/or compresses. Even if there is no apparent damage on the exterior of the helmet, there could be fractures or compressions hidden under the shell. Manufacturers of Bike helmets recommend you change your helmet every five years because exposure to the weather and natural wear and tear degrade the protective material's ability to do its job. If the pads inside your helmet are worn out, it's a clear sign that it's time to replace it.
