To safeguard your two-wheeler from any sort of damage or loss, you are advised by insurance experts to buy a bike insurance plan. The most recommended car insurance is comprehensive car insurance that gives own-damage cover as well as third-party liability. Apart from the insurance part, you should also have the knowledge about Chassis, VIN and engine number of your bike. Let’s discuss the meaning of these numbers and where can you find them.
What Is A Chassis Number?
The chassis of a two-wheeler is a frame around which the bike or scooter is manufactured by the company. When it comes to an identification number, it is considered the most important part of a bike. The chassis number is generally used to recognise the bike in case it is stolen or meets a collision. It is present on the vehicle registration certificate and since it is a compulsion to own bike insurance, therefore, insurers require the bike’s chassis number to mention on the bike policy papers.
However, the location of its presence may vary based on the bike model, but generally, the chassis number is found imprinted below the pillion seat where it is joint with the frame of the bike or on the handle connection point bike.
What Is Vehicle Identification Number?
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) comprises a 17 character identification code that consists of numbers and letters. It is used in the identification of the manufacturer of the bike. Let’s go through what its numbers stand for:
1. VIN’s 1st to 3rd characters are called WMI codes to identify where the bike was manufactured.
2. VIN’s 4th to 9th characters hold the vehicle descriptor section which denotes the bike’s characteristic features.
3. VIN’s 10th to 17th characters refers to the vehicle identifier segment that shows the year of the model, engine, and code of plant and transmission.
However, you can also locate the VIN of your bike on its steering neck. There are a few bikes on which the VIN is situated on the motor. If you are unable to find the VIN you can get in touch with your manufacturer or dealer of the bike.
What Is An Engine Number?
The engine number of a bike refers to its identification number. You can find it on the engine of your bike. You can find it easily on your bike’s RC and owner’s manual same as the chassis number and VIN. Also, you can find your bike’s engine number online on the government website known as VAHAN.
How to Find Bike Details At One Place?
The VAHAN is a website launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway, which comprise all the details of the registered bike. You can get the details of your bike after entering a few required details of it. However, the website does not show the engine and chassis number to shield your bike.
