India to Gift 2 Lakh Covid-19 Vaccine Doses to UN Peacekeepers
Recently S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister announced that India will gift 2 lakh covid-19 doses to the United Nation Peacekeepers. He made the announcement addressing the United Nations Security Council open debate on Implementation of Resolution 2532. The minister made his remarks through video conferencing.
In his speech, S Jaishankar stated that India has been quite at the forefront of the worldwide fight against the coronavirus disease and wishes to provide vaccines to the world under 'Vaccine Maitri' initiatives.
It must be noted that 25 nations across the globe have already received Made in India coronavirus vaccines. According to the minister, 49 more countries will be supplied in the coming days, right from Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean to Africa, South-East Asia and the Pacific Islands. He stated that India is an important source of supply to the COVAX facility. However, we are also directly sending vaccines to friends and partners.
Starting with India’s immediate neighbours, 25 nations on a global level have already been given Made in India covid-19 vaccines. 49 more countries will be shipped coronavirus vaccines in the coming time. Vaccines will be shipped to many nations including Europe, Latin America, Africa, Caribbean, South-East Asia, Pacific Islands, and more. Since UN Peacekeepers work in extremely difficult circumstances, India has decided to gift them 2 lakh novel coronavirus vaccine doses. India is also working actively with GAVI, WHO and ACT Accelerator as well as supporting SAARC.
S Jaishankar, in his speech also shed light on the concerns regarding vaccines, including lack of global coordination with respect to vaccine distribution and the massive costs of inequitable vaccine distribution.
