Single Dose of Covid-19 Vaccine Boosts Protection Against Variants in Previously Infected: Study
According to a study, a single dose of mRNA Covid-19 vaccine boosts protection against SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus variants, but for people who have been previously infected with the virus.
The researchers took into consideration the variants of the U.K. and South Africa but believe the possibility that the findings can be applied to other variants as well including Brazil (P.1) and India (B.1.617 and B.1.618 variants).
The study shows that people who have not been previously infected with Covid-19 but have taken a dose of Covid-19 vaccine may show insufficient response to the Covid-19 variants.
After analyzing the blood samples to check the immunity levels against the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 and Kent and South Africa variants, the researchers found that after the first dose of the vaccine, prior infection was related to boosted B cell, T cell, and neutralizing antibody response, which could offer protection against the 3 variants.
But for people without any prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, getting a single dose of mRNA vaccine resulted in lower levels of neutralizing antibodies for the variants, thereby potentially making them vulnerable to the Covid-19 infection, and making it important to get the second dose. Although, the levels of protection offered by T cells are still unclear.
India started its vaccination drive in January 2021 with Covaxin and Covishield vaccines. Until May 3rd, 12,67,04,151 people have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine whereas 2,75,07,360 people have received the second dose as well.
