The Ministry of Finance has extended the renewal dates for Third Party Motor insurance policies till May 15, 2020, due to the ongoing coronavirus (covid-19) lockdown. The extension has been provided for the insurance policies due for renewal between March 25, 2020 to April 14, 2020.
The move has come as a relief to the policyholders as in the absence of an active third party car insurance policy is an offence in the country which is punishable with a fine of Rs. 2,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 months. Also, in the absence of a valid third party car insurance policy, a car owner is liable to pay for third party liabilities, including bodily injuries, death, permanent/temporary disability and property damage incurred by a third party, himself/herself in case of an accident involving his/her car.
As per the Health Ministry, the number of positive coronavirus cases have crossed the 10477 mark in the country with 414 deaths. Globally, Covid-19 has infected more than 2 million people and has caused at least 126,000 fatalities. In an attempt to contain the contagious pandemic Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended the ongoing nationwide lockdown till May 3, 2020.
