Owing to the convenience that a car offers, a large number of people in India now prefer buying cars. On buying a car in India, there are certain essential documents that you need to keep with yourself. Some of these documents are Car Registration Certificate, Car Insurance plan, Pollution Under Certificate, and many more. Another important document is NOC or No Objection Certificate which becomes important in case you are planning to shift to a new city. So, let us understand all about the NOC process in car insurance in detail in the section below.

What is NOC in Car Insurance?

A No Objection Certificate or NOC is issued by the Regional Transport Office to validate the legal transfer of a vehicle from one RTO to another. Once an individual obtains a NOC from their concerned RTO, then it becomes easier for them to get their vehicle registered in the nearest RTO. The NOC certificate specifies that all the clearances have been done and the owner has no outstanding liabilities such as road taxes, challan fees, and others. This NOC certificate is important when you are relocating your vehicle from one Indian city to another or one Indian state to another. It is also important to note that it a NOC is a must-have document as per the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988. 

Here are a few instances in which you would require a No Objection Certificate or NOC:

  • In case you are planning to shift to a new city for professional or other reasons, then a NOC will become a must in order to drive legally in another city
  • If you are selling your car to someone else, then also a No Objection Certificate will become important
  • If the owner of the car passes away and his/her car is being sold to someone else or if the car is being auctioned 
  • NOC is also mandatory in case you are travelling to a new Indian state for more than 3 months 

Process to Obtain NOC in Car Insurance

The process to obtain NOC in car insurance is quite simple. Here is all that you need to do in order to obtain NOC In car insurance:

  • First and foremost, the vehicle owner needs to visit their nearest Regional Transport Office or RTO where their vehicle was initially registered
  • Next, as per section 48 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, you will have to fill out form 28 with all the correct information
  • Then, pay the applicable fees to obtain NOC for your vehicle. While paying for the NOC fees, you can also pay all the outstanding taxes
  • After the payment has been done, RTO will verify the outstanding fees as well as contact the nearest police station about the same
  • Once everything is approved, RTO will issue a NOC. Generally, you can obtain NOC within 3-4 working days

Alternatively, you can also obtain NOC through the online process. For the same, you need to visit the official website of Parivahan and enter all the relevant details.
