What Is Tinted Glass?

Tinted glass is an additional feature that many people add to their car’s window in order to block the sunlight. Generally, tinted glass is not a default feature and can only be added upon the demand of car owners. With the help of tinted glass, the interior temperature of the car is lowered. Additionally, tinted glass also provides the added advantage of protecting the interior of a car from damage due to sunlight. However, despite the many benefits, tinted glass in cars has been banned by the RTO. Read on to know why.

Why Is There A Ban on The Use Of Tinted Glass

Owning a car may be a sign of luxury, however, there are certain rules and regulations that you must strictly adhere to while the same and one such is regarding the use of tinted glass in a car. With effect from 19th May 2012, it has been regulated by the Supreme Court of India that the use of tinted glass in cars can result in a penalty or fine.

Some of the major reasons why tinted glass is banned in India are as follows:

  • To curb criminal activities: It has been found that many criminals took the advantage of tinted glasses for performing criminal activities. To curb the same, a ban on the use of tinted glass is a wise move as it certainly helps to protect individuals from being a victim of criminal activities in any moving car.
  • To reduce the risk of accidents: Tinted glasses reduce visibility to some extent, so in order to reduce the frequency of accidents and ensure that the visibility is unhampered, it is better that such glasses are banned.

In addition to those mentioned above, there are several other reasons why it was a must to impose a ban on the use of tinted glasses.

Furthermore, according to RTO rules for car glass film, there is a set criterion. The visibility required through the glass used in cars is as follows:

  • The side glasses must have a minimum of 50% visibility.
  • Further, the front and rear glasses must have a minimum of 70% visibility.

Despite this rule, more than 1 lakh cars in India are found to be violating the said norms. Due to this, a total of over 2 crore fine has already been collected as a violation of the rule. Therefore, it is very important to adhere to the above-mentioned norms.

What Is The Fine For Use Of Tinted Glass

Wondering what is the fine imposed on individuals for the use of tinted glass in their car? According to the RTO rule, the fine levied upon the use of tinted glass is Rs. 100. You must be thinking that the penalty is nominal and you can go against the RTO rules. However, remember that the fine only increases as you keep violating the RTO rules. If you are caught using tinted glass in your car for the second time, the penalty is Rs. 300 and further, for the third time, the fine is doubled, and your driving license will be cancelled. Thus, be extremely careful of the consequences in case you are already using tinted glasses in your vehicle.

Alternatives To Tinted Glass

As soon as tinted glasses were banned in India, many car owners were not sure how to cope with the extreme rays of the sun. However, gradually, several alternatives to tinted glass have come to the forefront. Recently a new product ‘Dark Green UV Cut Glass’ was introduced in the Indian market. This type of glass has the capability to reduce the thermal load of the car’s interior and eliminate UV radiation by more than 80 percent. Most importantly, the glass is within the 50% visibility mark making it a viable alternative for those who need it. You can also consult RTO for further clarification.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that after the ban you must be cautious when using tinted glass in India, despite the fact that Indian temperatures can make it unbearable inside vehicles in summer. Moreover, in order to adhere to traffic regulations, reducing accidents as well as criminal activities are the primary reasons why the ban on tinted glass was essential.
