What to Do When Having a Heart Attack?

If you think you are having a heart attack, acting quickly would be extremely helpful in ensuring survival. In most cases, heart attacks start slowly with slight discomfort and pain, actually giving warning signs before they strike. If you experience any of such symptoms, note that it could be a sign of a heart attack. Other symptoms may include discomfort in arms, neck, back, jaw, or stomach, shortness of breath, cold sweat, vomiting, nausea, lightheadedness, or dizziness.

That said, in case of a heart attack, you should:

1. Call The Ambulance - If a person is having a heart attack, emergency helpline number 112 or 102 for an ambulance should be called for help. A local, nearby hospital can also be called if it is quicker. Side by side, any kind of strain on the heart of the patient should be removed by bringing them in a comfortable position. The best position is on the floor, leaning against a wall having head & shoulders supported and knees bent. Clothing around the neck, chest, and waist of the patient should be loosened. The patient should not be crowded, either by the family or the public. Also, the patient should not be left unattended. If the patient has been prescribed medicine (chewable) for cardiovascular disease, they should be allowed to take it. Continuous monitoring of the patient (breathing, pulse, and consciousness check) should be done.

2. Take Aspirin While Waiting for Help to Arrive - If the patient is still conscious, he or she can be given a normal dose of aspirin (chewable) until the arrival of an ambulance. Aspirin is said to work effectively in slowing down the clotting of blood. It also minimizes the size of the blood clots that might have formed. Once you have helped by your side, you will be taken to the hospital and given the desired treatment according to the type of heart attack you had. (P.S. Aspirin is only advised if the patient is not allergic to it.)

3. Forceful Coughing - A common type of treatment found online is forceful coughing. Many online sources claim that deep breathing and deep coughing can raise blood pressure for a few seconds, thereby delivering more blood to the brain. Remember, coughing repeatedly is not advised. (P.S. The effectiveness of this method cannot be guaranteed. Also, this tip can only work on a patient who is conscious).

What to Do if a Person Having a Heart Attack Is Unconscious?

If the patient is unconscious, his or her state should be described to the emergency or ambulance operator so that they can start the desired equipment like an ECG machine, oxygen cylinder, etc. CPR should be given by a person who is trained in it, else chest compressions should be provided.
